What it counts

• Characters with and without whitespace, counted by Unicode code point.
• Words are runs of letters, digits, apostrophes and hyphens.
• Sentences end at ., !, ? or … followed by a space or the end.
• Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line.
• Reading time assumes 220 words per minute; speaking time 130.

Most-used words

Words of three or more letters are counted. "Ignore common words" drops a small list of function words like the, and, to. The share is that word as a percentage of the counted words.

Limits

• Sentence and paragraph detection is rule-based; unusual punctuation or single-line text can shift the numbers.
