About Word & Character Counter

Word & Character Counter gives live counts for any text you paste or type: characters with and without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, lines, and an estimate of reading and speaking time. It also lists the words that come up most.

The text stays in the page. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste text into the box.
  2. The counts update on every keystroke.
  3. Use 'Ignore common words' to drop function words like the and and from the most-used list.

Common questions

How is reading time worked out?

Word count divided by 220 words per minute for reading, and 130 for speaking.

What counts as a sentence?

A run of text ending in a period, exclamation mark, question mark or ellipsis, followed by a space or the end of the text.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Every count is computed in JavaScript in the open tab.

Does it count non-English words?

Yes. Any Unicode letters count as word characters.
